Rachel Connell is a native of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and received her BA in Art at Rhodes College in Memphis in 2012. She taught middle school special education in Clinton, Louisiana for a few years before moving Iowa City. She is a current MFA candidate in the Painting & Drawing program at the University of Iowa and will graduate this spring.
In her own words:
My work explores the obsession and grandeur of consumerism and its many components within the culture of the United States. I am most interested in examining and questioning 'ordinary' experiences within American consumer culture that the majority of people living in the United States have had: walking through a mall, looking at an advertisement on TV, swiping a credit card, listening to music being played at a restaurant, spending money on gifts. These moments, images, and actions are so commonplace that we do not often stop to contemplate them. By painting landscapes, objects, and text that is based entirely within our reality, I challenge the viewer to question their own experiences. Through the medium of painting I examine what it means to not only live in American consumer culture, but what it means to be an active participant within it.
