MARINA ROSS My Pleasure (Forever Yours), Installation view, Visual Arts Building, University of Iowa, 2018
Marina Ross was born in the USSR in 1990 and grew up outside of Chicago. She earned her BFA from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and her MFA from the University of Iowa. Her work has been exhibited throughout Chicago and New York and she completed the Saint Petersburg Artist Residency in Russia in 2017. In her own words:
My recent body of work entitled My Pleasure (Forever Yours) investigates the relationship between desire, fantasy, transformation and the body as a conduit for change. Referencing the 1990 romantic comedy Pretty Woman, which I watched incessantly as a child with my aunt, I consider how the makeover trope has become a genre of cinema and how the female body routinely acts as the site of transformation. Through illusionistic paintings which depict scenes of consumption from the movie and viscerally glazed ceramic sculptures, the work oscillates between the real and the fantastical.
