Contraption, Mixed, 6' x 6' x 10', 2006

Ross Koon is an alumnus of Grinnell College and is currently a resident of Grinnell Iowa.

Of his work, Koon states, "My sculptures begin with found photos and a structure in which to create a piece. My structures are geometric hollow contraptions of wood and other materials into which I can begin to build an environment that interprets how the photos affect me. The photos are typically antiques found in second-hand stores and satisfy a need for some kind of cultural history; each piece I create becomes a grasp at a past I can never really know or understand. My art comes from process, technical study, practice, and a feeling of wonder at past lives. I want people to see and experience all of these things by viewing, touching, and interacting with each sculpture."
