CHRISTIAN PETERSEN Julegranen: Angel, Colored pencil on paper, 8 3/4" x 11 7/8", 1940s
Danish - American, 1885–1961 From Iowa State University Museums: "This drawing is one of many designs and drawings Christian Petersen produced for the Danish-American publication, Julegranen. Throughout his life, he maintained a strong identification with his Danish heritage, and was always willing to make a contribution to publications such as this one. The editor of Julegranen, August Bang, had been a friend of Petersen's father and had readily promoted Petersen's career whenever he could. He wrote about the artist for his publications (emphasizing the role of his Danish background) and recommended him for commissions and recognition. In the 1940s and 1950s, there seemed to be almost a tradition of Petersen creating the cover for the Christmas issue of Julegranen."
Purchased from Mary Petersen. In the Christian Petersen Art Collection, Christian Petersen Art Museum, University Museums, Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa. About Christian Petersen, at Iowa State University |
