Wide Open Mind

Public Art in Iowa

The State of Iowa has a rich art culture that includes many wonderful works of public art. These artworks may be commissioned by the state, by private organizations, or even by generous individuals, and can be found at airports, in hospitals, schools and universities, and even alongside highways! The Daily Palette is happy to feature these works created for the enrichment of our communities and the delight of our visitors.

Wide Open Mind, Bronze, 2016

Kimber Fiebiger creates bronze sculptures that range from fun and whimsical, to classical and contemporary. She lives in Minneapolis yet her sculptures have been sold all over the country where she has won numerous awards. She created Wide Open Mind for the 2016–2017 Ames Annual Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition, where it promptly become the object of controversy. Some viewers were put off by the nudity and posture of this figure, but Fiebiger explained that it was "meant to resemble a woman in the horse yoga pose, which is designed to strengthen legs and calm the mind." She has created many yogic sculptures, some of which you can view on her gallery website, linked below.
