The Astronauts

The Astronauts, acrylic, spray paint, and oil enamel on canvas, 72" x 82", 2015

Edgard Camacho was born in Venezuela where he received advanced formal training in drawing, painting, and sculpture.  He recently graduated from the Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield, Iowa where he earned a BFA and a BA in Media and Communications with a concentration in writing.  Edgard's work has been shown both nationally and internationally, including in Iowa, Florida, Spain, and Venezuela.

Edgard lives and works in Des Moines, Iowa.

The artist writes, "I dissect shapes from human anatomy drawings seeking to bring them to life.  Those forms that later look like kindergarten paper cutouts become an intimate alphabet, joined together in infinite combinations.  This two-dimensional space is structured by the relationship of opposites: solid vs. texture, shiny vs. flat, a gesture vs. a rigid posture.

As I become more deeply engaged in process, I notice myself letting go and allowing the paint to make its own way.  Pieces are puzzle-building entities that play around a stage, they fool themselves, they talk to each other, and they also smile and cry.  As a director of their melody, I submerge myself in our pleasures, victories and dramas; but after a while I surrender to them and they dictate to me as needed.  They become royalty within their own unknown kingdoms.  In the end it is a delicate negotiation between the materials and myself."
