Iowa Writes

Completely Naked Now

Her stark black lines are
completely naked now,
not a leaf left on a single branch or twig.

The maple in the tree lawn in front of
my house is like a stencil of fine lines
through which I can see the brown
house across the street.

Yesterday there were a few leaves left
clinging tenuously to the anchor of their birth
while their brethren scattered in the wind and
flew like a flock of wild geese around the neighborhood.

Their crusty sound scraping as
wind drove them down the street
to eddy and land in little heaps
wherever the momentum died down.
