Prairie Fire: Regrowth

JAN FRIEDMAN
Prairie Fire: Regrowth, small woven tapestries, dyed and woven cotton bands, dyed silk organza, sun printed linen, leaves, acrylic paint, sticks, stones, 20" x 28", 2014

Fiber artist Jan Friedman has been weaving since 1974.  Jan received her M.A. in Textile Design at the University of Iowa in 1980.  She has conducted workshops in weaving, color, and dyeing throughout the country.  Her tapestries and framed collages have been featured in numerous invitational and juried exhibits and have been commissioned for corporate collections across the United States.

"I weave tapestries using a variety of yarn and dyed silk fabric, along with fiber collages that incorporate woven fragments, Japanese paper, and natural objects I find on walks, such as stones, leaves, and twigs.

I want these pieces to entice you to take a closer look---at surfaces that vary in texture---at bold color combinations and slow chromatic gradations.  I hope this work evokes a response from you, whether it is spiritual, emotional, or simply curiosity about content and techniques."
