Emily Kiewel discovered pottery while she was an undergraduate student.  She then traveled to Japan where she received training from a third-generation production potter and learned many techniques, some of which are more than 2000 years old.  Her style is strongly influenced by the training she received.  Emily has been a full-time studio potter since 1997.  She creates functional pottery from high-fired stoneware and porcelain in her studio in Charles City, Iowa.

Emily writes, "I am motivated by the materials I use and my surroundings.  My materials and methods are primordial and basic.  I use elemental substances coupled with a spinning wheel and gravity which I influence with my will.  With earth, fire, and the patterns on a beetle or a tree trunk, I create an object that is made to enrich the daily rituals of life."
