Daily Palette Double Feature

Elevator #1, Tribune, Kansas, gelatin silver print, 10" x 10", 2009

Judith Eastburn was born in Iowa City in 1944.  She earned an MS in Microbiology, and an MA and MFA in Photography from the University of Iowa.  She has been a photographer for a long time, still using a film camera and making traditional black and white prints in her darkroom.  She is now retired, and traveling with her camera.

About her work, the artist writes, "Most recently, I have been seeking out grain elevators in Iowa and the Midwest and making a record of their endurance and position in the landscape.  Sometimes tilting a bit, often the last building left standing, they represent a way of life bypassed by more modern farming practices.  I try to note the surface textures and geometry as well as the expressive qualities of these wonderful structures."
