Diamond Back Terrapin

Diamond Back Terrapin, bronze, 3" x 7" x 11"

Along with Steve Maxon, Doris is an owner of Max-Cast, a sculpture foundry based in Kalona, Iowa.

"I started out in childhood with an almost obsessive desire to create art work, drawing on every surface, and making sculptures out of mud. Later in life, I took classes at the University of Minnesota where I became fascinated with metal casting.

Besides art, I've always been crazy about animals of every kind. I wanted to be a naturalist, or talk to animals like Dr. Doolittle. This translated into making all kinds of animals (including humans) the subjects of my artwork. I try to portray the unique beauty of all the creatures of the world, the shapes and textures, the personalities of even the smallest ones.

To me, my representations are meant to allow others to see what I see, the beauty and perfection of everything around us, and of the creatures which share our planet."
