DAVID B. HEUSINKVELD East Amana Cow Call, photograph
David B. Heusinkveld is a retired special education teacher. He became a nature photographer after a life-changing accident ten years ago. The accident killed his oldest son, Jordan, and left David with permanent injuries. His photographs have been exhibited at the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art, the Amana Heritage Museum, and the Englert Theater. They have also been published in state-wide media. A book of his photographs, The Amana Landscape, was a finalist in the 2013 annual Benjamin Franklin Awards contest of the Independent Book Publisher of America (IBPA). The book was also a national finalist in the USA Book Awards Contest. Additionally, it received the top award in the Nature category of the 2013 National Indie Excellence Book Awards. Mr. Heusinkveld has been married to his wife Carol, of Amana, for 32 years. They have one son, Forrest, of Iowa City. We featured a photograph by Mr. Heusinkveld on yesterday's Daily Palette as well.
