Happy Earth Week!

In honor of Earth Day on April 22nd, the Daily Palette is celebrating earth-friendly art and literature all this week. We are honoring Iowa-connected artists and writers who show respect for our planet through their work.

"home.land", 2012

Lisa Johnson earned an MFA in Sculpture from the University of Iowa in 2012.

About "home.land":

"home.land" was an installation that mapped our relationship with the Iowa prairie over a 100 year period. The installation included handmade paper quilts (using native plants), a quilting performance, audio pieces, and an eco-action quilting bee."

Ms. Johnson writes this about her work:

"My work explores our relationships to landscape and to one another. I am particularly interested in the interactions of untold stories, lesser histories, and mythologies that make up our sense of personal and ecological place. My work often asks: What is the space between us? And: What might it take to cross it? Layering sculpture, language, theatricality, oral tradition, and personal myth, I try to capture the shifting perspective we face as our bodies relate to the spaces we inhabit and those we inhabit them with."
