SARAH DEPPE Sarah Deppe, a sculptor in Cedar Falls, IA, received her BFA from the University of Northern Iowa in 2011. She has exhibited sculpture in numerous national juried outdoor sculpture shows throughout the Midwest, including Illinois, Kansas, and Iowa. Sarah was awarded the People's Choice Award at the Art on the River Show in Dubuque, IA. She has also participated in residencies at the Hartman Reserve Nature Center in Cedar Falls, IA and Popop Studios in Nassau, Bahamas. Sarah is currently working on a public art commission for Texas A&M University, and a solo show at the Waldemar A. Schmidt Art Gallery at Wartburg College in Waverly, IA. About her work: Sarah's artwork for the past few years has been informed by her interest in environmental politics and science. She prefers to use found or reclaimed industrial materials such as plastic, synthetic fabrics, and rubber not only because it is a less consumptive process, but because using these materials in new ways also offers another layer of content for the viewer to explore. Sarah exploits the potential visual power of ephemeral materials such as living plants, bark, and wood, as well as heavily processed industrial scrap with an enormous half-life. It is her intent to elicit a dialog about the dynamics of this juxtaposition and to illuminate the reckless indifference that exists to the environment. |
