MARVIN CONE Currently on display, Cedar Rapids Museum of Art, Museum purchase, Dorothy Houts Fund, 86.1.186 Cedar Rapids native Marvin Cone (1891-1965) was one of Iowa's most important artists. Cone's influence in Cedar Rapids is attested to by the multitude of students he taught in his 42 years at Coe College. More than that, Cone's work is reflective of several aspects of American art and his place in the greater discussion of American art remains under-recognized. The exhibition, "Marvin Cone: An American Master," attempts to rectify that oversight, not only reassessing Cone's work in general but also contextualizing it in the larger picture of American art. This is the first major solo exhibition of Cone's work since 1980. This large, 7-gallery exhibition is on view at the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art through January 20, 2013.
