CHRISTINA MCCLELLAND Touchstone, glass, dry pasta, craft paper, spray paint, 10" x 24" x 24", 2011
Christina McClelland is an interdisciplinary artist working primarily in sculpture, installation, and printmaking. She received an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BFA from the University of Iowa. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, notably at the Gene Siskel Film Center in Chicago, IL; the Des Moines Art Center in Des Moines, IA; and the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art in Omaha, NE. Upcoming exhibitions and curatorial projects include a two-person show at Roxaboxen Exhibitions in Chicago, IL, curating a group show in Champaign, IL, and a solo show in Izmir, Turkey. My artistic practice deals with notions of perceived success through objects and motifs that serve as markers of prestige and value. Recent works have transformed humble materials such as dry pasta, sponges, and glue into sculptures, object-based installations, and embellished digital prints that contrast the lofty idea of a commemorative object and its physical materiality. Overall, my work broadly examines the relationship between decoration, presentation, and implied value. Situated between critical use of historical objects, a low-brow version of pop art, and Martha Stewart's home improvement projects, my work questions the perception of, desire for, and pursuit of coveted and commemorative objects that mark success in society.
