Rich with Birds and Fruit, painting

John Beckelman balances a consistent studio regimen with a highly successful teaching career at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. A former native of the East Coast, Beckelman received his undergraduate degree in English from Hobart College in Geneva, New York. He earned an M.F.A. in ceramics at Illinois State University, Normal.

Working with clay in both two and three dimensions, the artist acknowledges that this results in two distinct bodies of work:

"The vessels are intended to evoke a sense of timelessness and stability. Their forms and surfaces are inspired simultaneously by neolithic storage vessels and the natural world…The relationships between scale and form in the work are an effort to accentuate the sense of a quiet presence.

The paintings attempt to evoke qualities similar to the vessels, while at the same time trying to gently entice the viewer into the the inner landscapes and interior spaces of our imagination and memory. To this end, the sense of perceptual space defined by the marks, textures and images is purposely ambiguous..."
