Iowa Writes SABRA I Remember I remember Snowdell Lake and Potato boats and walking out to the Island because the water was shallow. I remember Roosevelt Elementary and the playground and having to come home when the porch light came on I remember my first cigarette and it was a Sundance. I was hiding downstairs and grandmas and I wanted to look cool and smoke and drink all at once. I choked. I remember moving from Cherokee Heights to Pryor behind Lincoln Elementary on 1st street. I remember Kindergarten, I got spanked with a board, Paddled I remember first grade, I failed. I had to repeat. I was going to Lincoln Elementary. I couldn't say the name Roy...it came out a Rahry, who flunks in the first grade... well I do I remember Claremore, Mom taught at Rodgers State College. My friend tried suicide I got expelled for bringing pills to school. I got committed to Tulsa Regional Medical Center. I was on the acute psychiatric ward. I was an in-patient. I remember love its tears and laughter I remember Rock Island my first real true love was murdered I remember "Off-Limits" as a place, a club I went to on Friday nights with a few friends, cover charge was ten dollars and it closed at midnight. About Iowa Writes Since 2006, Iowa Writes has featured the work of Iowa-identified writers (whether they have Iowa roots or live here now) and work published by Iowa journals and publishers on The Daily Palette. Iowa Writes features poetry, fiction, or nonfiction twice a week on the Palette. In November of 2008, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) designated Iowa City, Iowa, the world's third City of Literature, making the community part of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. Find out more about submitting by contacting iowa-writes@uiowa.edu SABRA Sabra was a prisoner at the Iowa Correctional Institute for Women when she wrote this piece, which was read during a public performance in Shambaugh Auditorium by the Women in Exile Project. The Women in Exile Project is a collaboration between the women at the Iowa Correctional Institute for Women, volunteers from the Women's Resource and Action Center, the Women's Archive at the University of Iowa Libraries and the Art Education Department at the University of Iowa. The project has worked with a select group of women at ICIW to publish a series of memoirs and images. The memoirs will become a part of the Women's Archive and the images part of a permanent collection located at the Women's Resource and Action Center. |
