Where I'm From

I am from the twisting and the twisted trees of the forest.
I am from the sound of the trees swaying back and forth.
I am from sitting in the tallest tree waiting silently for the prey         of the forest.
I am from firing arrow after arrow into the target.
I am from casting over and over trying to catch the monster of         the water.
I am from correcting my errors.
I am from trying over and over until I succeed.

Riley Regennitter was in the fifth grade at Horn Elementary School in Iowa City, Iowa, when this poem was selected for the 2010 Poetry in Public project, sponsored by the Iowa City Public Art Program. Now in its eighth year, Poetry in Public displays poems by local writers of all ages in Iowa City buses, downtown kiosks, and select public buildings from April (National Poetry Month) through the fall.
