With your ambitious hands, you mold me.
A daughter, a friend, a woman to love.
My delicate skin is covered with fingerprints,
Traces of your thousand dreams engraved in me.
All this, you create in absolute darkness
For you are terrified that light will uncover
Only a lump of clay frowning upon your face.

Tony Yu was in the ninth grade at West High School in Iowa City, Iowa, when this poem was selected for the 2010 Poetry in Public project, sponsored by the Iowa City Public Art Program. Now in its eighth year, Poetry in Public displays poems by local writers of all ages in Iowa City buses, downtown kiosks, and select public buildings from April (National Poetry Month) through the fall.
