CHERIE COURTER
Fourth of July Triptych, acrylic on canvas, 30" x 40", 2009

Cherie Courter was born and raised in north central Iowa and has been a successful visual arts educator in Iowa public and parochial schools for 29 years.  She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Art Education and Elementary Education from Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa in 1978, and a Master of Science in Education from Buena Vista University in 1999.  Ms. Courter has acted as an adjunct professor of studio painting, art history, and art education for Buena Vista University, and as an adjunct professor of studio drawing for Iowa Central Community College.  Ms. Courter's acrylic paintings have been shown in exhibitions throughout the Midwest and are included in private collections in Iowa and surrounding states.  She currently paints in her studio known as Studio Upstairs located at 530 1/2 Erie St., downtown Storm Lake.

My paintings are an investigation of human form, light and environment.  There is often a focus on random patterns and interrelationships occurring within groups of people involved in the rituals of daily life, scenarios usually observed in Storm Lake or surrounding areas.  As well as, an examination of the effect of environments upon human and inanimate forms in terms of color, shadow and light.
