Iowa Writes

JULIET KAUFMANN
Air

Some days I cannot separate leaf
from wind as it makes itself visible
to those who prune and sweep.
How can anything stay
in a world where we see the wind
only as it shoulders us aside?
Even trees can't wait
as air pushes the sky past,
the plum set straight in April
leans in August,
heading somewhere East.
