Iowa Writes

A raft in the middle of a desert
keeps feet off of scorching parchment sand
the face closer to a sun burning
through the skin
so subtle
the sinking of a dying mother's face
            into itself
flesh meshing, drawn into thickening bones
a skeleton appears punctually
around the drying and chafing of a tongue
between lipless jaws of gaping breaths.
