The Mariah

The Mariah, oil and acrylic on canvas, 40" x 36", 2008

Britta Urness grew up in Black Earth, WI. She received her BFA in Studio Art from the University of Wisconsin Madison in 2004 and her MFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of Iowa in 2008.

The artist writes, "My most recent series uses hair and wigs as a foundation for creating portraits. The undulations and pattern of hair, especially well-coiffed wigs, provide a juicy matrix for one to push paint around in. Thick vs. thin or matte vs. glossy paint all make an appearance to flesh out this symbol of self image, femininity, glamour and visual culture. For me, the models or wig stands act as a quote of the presence of woman."
