Iowa Writes

ELIZABETH OSHRIN PARKER
20/20

I don't think this is new for you
or at least I hope not
we've been swimming in this for so long
I assume
everyone
knows
about
the
storm

I went outside
and breathed in the rain
I wanted moisture in my lungs
like you want
beauty in your way

I wonder if you would recognize
joy if I held it up for you
you're definitely not seeing purity
when it's dressed up as something else

I'm not blaming you
when we are taught to see only green
nothing looks lucky

I wish you saw the past
in the same prescription as I do
I get it's not fair to expect the same perspective
from a man who's a whole foot taller

I get that 20/20 in hindsight
only works for those who are looking back
If I could share only one thing with you
it wouldn't be my vision
