STEVEN HOLL ARCHITECTS
Visual Arts Building, University of Iowa, Iowa City, 126,000 sf, 2010-2016

Steven Holl Architects is an award-winning architecture and urban design office located in New York City and Beijing.  The office has completed projects all over the world, such as the interior renovation of the New York University Department of Philosophy building in New York City, the Knut Hamsun Center in Norway, and a 'horizontal skyscraper' in Shenzhen, China, just to name a few.  Steven Holl Architects has considerable experience with art-related architectural works, such as the new Institute for Contemporary Art at Virginia Commonwealth University, the Herning Museum of Contemporary Art in Denmark, and Iowa's own Art Building West (ABW) at the University of Iowa.

Steven Holl Architects is currently working on the new Visual Arts Building for the University of Iowa's School of Art and Art History.  The new art building, home to the University's studio art departments, will be located adjacent to ABW which will allow artists and art historians to come together again on an arts campus.  Set to be completed in 2016, the new building will offer 126,000 square feet of studio, office, and gallery spaces.

The Steven Holl Architects website emphasizes that the new Visual Arts Building will facilitate greater interaction between departments.  The open plan will encourage students and faculty to meet on landings and other areas.  This is evident in this image and in yesterday's watercolor.
