JARED ZIMMERLINE
You See California

I thought I would die before summer's end,
so I went to a beach
to throw stones at the ocean.
The sand was alone,
grey clouds curled above,
and the rain came,
patter clapping on the shore.

I threw my shoes in the water,
and dug my feet through
shallow ocean sand,
trapping sediment with toe webs
as the shining blue dreams
washed against my shins.

I thought I would die before summer's end,
so I went to a beach
to throw stones at the ocean.
The sand was alone,
grey clouds curled above,
and the rain came,
patter clapping on the shore.

I threw my shoes in the water,
and dug my feet through
shallow ocean sand,
trapping sediment with toe webs
as the shining blue dreams
washed against my shins.

The clouds disappeared and the sun set
in time to shine soft lullabies
across the glittered water top
as the rest of earth
prepared for
gentle night songs
from creatures who know
they will die too.

         I walked home in
black and blue twilight,
dripping saltwater wet,
smelling California mist
and summer's soft farewell,
beneath watchful stars,
and a grinning cynic
moon.

I thought I would die before summer's end,
so I prepared my daylight eulogy.
I spoke of breakfast and disappointment,
of betrayal and paying taxes,
of jungles and see-saw follies,
and how I lived a man
who never lost a sunset.
